A bloodline that can win here and there

Doyle Watson, an American game fowl breeder in Tennessee, had fought only in long gaff competitions. But he has developed a bloodline that can as well win in the short and long knife.

Indeed, they have been performing well in short knife competitions in Mexico and with the LK here in the Philippines. I am referring to the DW Shuffler.

So, clearly, if DW, when it was legal in US, had fought only in gaff then this bloodline of his is versatile as it also won in the short and long knife.

Why? Of course that means it is an adaptable and all around fighter because a bloodline with only a few strengths may win in one but not in all different types of weapons. A versatile bloodline is like a martial art master who kill with any weapon at hand. Simply stated, it can kill.

Now with the new anti-cockfighting laws throughout the US, these wonderful bloodline is endangered of being assigned to oblivion. But, maybe not. Because DW is still breeding for his friends in Mexico and also in the Philippines.

RB Sugbo is one of the fortunate ones who got the DW Shuffler, because our partner Vency Maranan is a friend of DW.

So far in our own level of competition, the shuffler, blended with our Blakliz, has won about 70% of its fight, an outstanding performance considering that in the Philippines winning 60% of your fights is already a kind of a feat.

So how do you breed versatility?

I think the DWS has three important attributes: gameness, cut and smarts. These three traits are enough for a rooster to perform well in the gaff and even in the short knife.

I blended the DWS with the Blakliz to add speed for fighting in the long knife. However, the three traits alone: gameness, cut and smarts are enough to be competitive in any weapon, including the long knife.

I believe to be versatile, a roosters doesn’t need all the good fighting traits. Just the few that count. Breed these few traits in your bloodline over enough period of time until these genes are fixed in your bloodline.

My opinion is if I want versatility, I will just breed into my lines cutting ability; gameness; and smarts. With these three traits, a line can be adaptable to any kind of fighting. Maybe add speed for knife fighting or power for gaff. Or maybe, no need to add anything at all.

I want versatility so I breed the DW Shuffler. Thank you Doyle your bloodline has taught me a lot about breeding good game fowl.

And by the way the DWS doesn’t “bounce too much.” Among the lessons I learned from Doyle is a good rooster need not “bounce too much.”
