Buyers will soon be asking the right questions
Yes, time will come that buyers will be knowledgeable enough to appraise the value of the genetics in breeding materials. When they buy, they will be asking the right questions. Therefore sellers should be ready with the right answers. The reason why at present so called breeders get away with wrong answers because buyers don’t know yet the right questions to ask. Buyers don’t know and don’t mind, thus, there is still no need for sellers to know much too. What they both didn’t know would not hurt them, anyway. When the buyers will come to know the right questions, sellers must then be ready with right answers.
Many just acquire materials, mate and propagate them. They are not breeding but mating. Breeding is different. You have to learn and understand first what is breeding before you become a breeder. That will be the time that you will know the right questions to ask when acquiring materials.
Yes, there are “maters,” there are breeders. But, mind you there’s nothing wrong with being a “mater.” Many are into cockfighting for the fighting aspect, not the breeding aspect. They enjoy the fighting and gambling side of cockfighting. Some are not even “maters”. They just buy chickens and fight them, they are the cockers. Again, there’s nothing wrong with being a “mater” or a simple cocker. It is their thing. What’s important is they are happy with what they are doing. In the same manner real breeders have different goals. And, they too are happy with what they are doing.
Yes, maters and breeders vary in purpose. Maters are into it for reproducing or propagating gamefowl, as hobby or for selling or for fighting. On the other hand, breeders apply science to produce the gamefowl they want. The challenge is how to produce the animal that you want. And, you can do it better if you understand a little science of breeding.
Breeding is more than a hobby, it’s a vocation. Breeders get satisfaction out of merely creating the animal they want. Winning is just a confirmation that the gamefowl they have produced could win. Because in gamefowl breeding fighting performance is a factor. Many breeders also sell. As to money matters, sometimes, being a real breeder pays off financially. First because of their knowledge, they can produce the gamefowl they want at less time, money and effort. Then, “maters” would eventually learn to buy their mating materials from real breeders. Especially, if these “maters” will come to realize the advantage of good genetics in the gamefowl. Of course, they would want to get their materials from real breeders who know what they are doing. They want to benefit from the expertise of real breeders. This is called flock sourcing. One can take advantage of the knowledge of a good breeder by sourcing out materials year end year out, or periodically when necessary, from a single good breeder of choice.
Just a piece of advice. If you want to mate and produce gamefowl, for whatever reason, it really pays to learn a little genetics. You will enjoy more if you understand what you are doing. It will also earn you more satisfaction. And, yes, it can save you time, money and effort in producing the gamefowl you want.
