3-way rotation

Three-way rotation is a program that will enable the breeder to have continuity mating that may last for years with only three bloodlines. In our case, with our version of the 3-way rotation we are able to utilize both the males and females of each generation. The process also enables us to continuously purify or stabilize desired traits while breeding battle fowls. Thus, the longer the run, the purer will be the desired traits. The method proves doubly beneficial to us.

How is it done?

It involves three bloodlines. For example at RB Sugbo we have what we call as the 3-way premiums. Among the RB Sugbo premium bloodlines are the Shuffler Blakliz, Perubliz and the Blakliz Premium. RBS premium bloodlines are semi-exclusive, meaning they are not part of the RB Sugbo commercial operation and can only be acquired through special arrangements or projects such as MANA’s Programa Masa Gana.

First we cross the Shuffler Blakliz with the Perubliz. The offspring will be a two-way battle cross. However, this is not a terminal cross. A terminal cross is a cross from which the males can be fought but the females are culled for they will serve no further breeding purpose for the breeder.

In the Shuffler Blakliz x Perubliz mating we fight the males but we also keep the females as future brood hens instead of culling them.

The following year, if everything is fine, we will put a Blakliz Premium brood cock over the 2-way Shuffler Blakliz x Perubliz pullets. This now results in a 3-way premium cross.

Again we will fight the males and still keep the females for future breeding purposes. Yes the females are a 3 –way cross. However, because the 3 bloodlines share so many common traits, the 3-way premiums are not crossed up. On the contrary, their common traits have been stabilized further.

The following season, depending on which is more appropriate, we will put either a shuffler Blakliz or a Perubliz brood cock over the 3-way premium pullets. So say we do a Perubliz x BLP/Shuffler Blakliz/Perubliz pullets, the offspring shall still be 3-way cross, only with a higher proportion of the Perubliz blood. Again we fight the males and keep the females.

The following year we put a Blakliz Shuffler brood cock x the pullets of the previous mating to produce the same 3-way premium with a higher percentage of the Shuffler Blakliz. This can go on and on for years until the combination breaks down or become stale.

You can avoid intense inbreeding by using the farthest related individuals every time.

This method is very effective if the 3 bloodlines you use have many common positive traits because the more these positive traits are purified or stabilized and imbedded in the combination. In effect you are purifying traits in a 3-way battle cross.

Whereas if you use bloodlines with many unlike or opposite traits, then you will get varying results all the time. Unpredictable because in one generation you may progress closer to your objective, the next you may retrogress.
