Active Rest

Active rest. (from Manwal ng MANA sa Pagkundisyon published 2008 by Rey Bajenting ). A few days before the fight we slow down the activities of the roosters scheduled for fight. We start to rest them. But rest doesn’t mean inactivity. Our process is called “active rest.” For example we don’t recommend the usual practice of keeping the roosters in a dark stall (kulungan or tangkal) for a couple of days before the fight. Since we still have to get the roosters out every few hours this would result in roller coaster effect in the pointing process. We keep our roosters in dark stalls only on fight day at the cockpit or at most starting on the afternoon of the day before the fight. Prior to that (2 days before fight) we keep them in 3 ft x 6 ft pointing pens. Pointing pen is a smaller version of the fly pen, with the roost at about 3 feet high from the ground. It is more enclosed to deprive the rooster full view to the outside and witness something that may disrupt rest. It should be in a cool and slightly dark place away from most of the other chickens. Two days before fight we still subject the roosters to light hand spar and palakad and kahig. As close as three days before the fight, the rotation of the roosters is as usual. Our last sparring is scheduled 5 days before the fight. After the last sparring follows what we call the peaking period. During this period we rest our roosters, but they are not confined to inactivity. We practice and advocate active rest.

What will be the standards

of the fighting rooster

of the future?

The Peruvian is getting popular in the Philippines. It is a different kind of rooster. It is much bigger, much taller, much stronger, although not necessarily better than the American Game fowl.

Definitely the Peruvian game fowl will change the standards of the future. In some instances it will tremendously improve the present bloodlines. On the other hand it could also ruin many good bloodlines of today.

The Peruvian has a couple of good traits vital to winning Long Knife fights. But it also has more bad traits. Finding out which are good and which are bad is the challenge.

We think just enough Peruvian blood is good. Too much Peruvian blood is bad.

We are trying to balance it out. Check out the PERUBLIZ.
