Peruvian challenge

Many experts agree that the Peruvian is an unstable bloodline. Have you noticed Peruvian Navajeros don’t look the same and don’t fight the same? This is because Peruvians are products of decades of cross breeding that they have become crossed up.

Breeding the Peruvian or blending it with the American game fowl is definitely tricky.

Most Peruvians have a couple of good attributes—high leaping ability and far extended cut. Why is this? My guest is because in Peru birds are not matched by weight. One bird might fight an opponent several hundred grams heavier. High leaping ability and outstretched cut may offset whatever advantage the opponent enjoys in weight. Therefore, it is likely that breeders in Peru aim for or unwittingly breed for these two attributes.

However, most Peruvians have many disadvantageous traits when fought in American or Philippine standard rules of fighting. Again this is because they are not bred for these types of fighting. (We at RB Sugbo GT have identified at least 4 negative traits in most Peruvians.)

The challenge in breeding or blending the Peruvian for PH fighting is how to keep the good traits and eliminate the bad ones.

Of course, keeping good traits and eliminating the bad ones ought to be the approach in breeding, regardless you breed American Game, Orientals or Peruvians. It is just that it is much tricky with the Peruvian, because most Peruvian bloodlines, being crossed up, are unstable in trait uniformity.

Breeding the Peruvian, however, is worth trying. It is both challenging and rewarding if you hit some jackpot. A little good Peruvian blood infused to good American strain may produce excellent hybrids. Remember a Negros breeder, Vic Lacsao, won the Bakbakan some years ago using Peruvian graded stags.

Just be careful and knowledgeable in selecting your materials and in setting your matings. Then, always be ready to get bums as well as aces.

What will be the standards

of the fighting rooster

of the future?

The Peruvian is getting popular in the Philippines. It is a different kind of rooster. It is much bigger, much taller, much stronger, although not necessarily better than the American Game fowl.

Definitely the Peruvian game fowl will change the standards of the future. In some instances it will tremendously improve the present bloodlines. On the other hand it could also ruin many good bloodlines of today.

The Peruvian has a couple of good traits vital to winning Long Knife fights. But it also has more bad traits. Finding out which are good and which are bad is the challenge.

We think just enough Peruvian blood is good. Too much Peruvian blood is bad.

We are trying to balance it out. Check out the PERUBLIZ.
